Wherever you are, spend a moment in Denmark right now... just looking around.
One of the most tactile ways to ingest the art and culture or aesthetic of a region is thought the structures we surround ourselves in. We understand it. Nothing so quickly tells the story of how people live, as seeing where they live. Nothing informs us so loudly of the people of the past as the structures they left behind. And nothing can tell a story with the need for fewer words than a picture.

When you don't speak Danish in Denmark that takes on real significance. When you don't understand a word that is said by all surrounding you, mercifully your eyes inform you. So the structure, the big accessible visual chunks of data with funny shapes and colors speak loudly with no words and charmingly tell the story of the land, the people, the history, and the culture, with no need for language.

My audience is often those who are not here, and my mission is to export the story, visually, of course. Ideally, my process is to create art. Some pieces work better to tell a story when I haven't quite been able to achieve art. We all end up with a few pieces of the story, and once in a while a piece of art. Sådan. Meaning that's the way it goes.

In the book, in occasional cases where I happen to have any surplus insight or context, I have added the note to the back.

A photographer's trick is to stand in front of something before you, and realise it's in front you only temporarily. Nothing has value until we assign it value. Or not. You can see the thing before you with beauty, interest, or value when you look for that, when you seek to find that. Things become art when we look at them as art. That also applies to the people in our life, so if that's all you take away I'm glad you read the description.
