Publisher's Synopsis
The proceedings include a number of invited tutorial papers on subjects of general interest in nonlinear dynamics, as well as contributed papers on recent developments in nonlinear optical systems. Among the areas of emphasis is the formation of complex spatial configurations and the mechanism of pattern selection in nonlinear systems. Invited speakers on these topics include Hermann Haken (Univ. Stuttgart), Michael Berry (Univ. Bristol), Pierre Coullet (Univ. Nice) and Mikhail Rabinovich (Nizhny Novgorod). Several international groups presented their latest results on optical defects, spatio-temporal chaos, and static and dynamic pattern formation in lasers and photo-refractive media. The application of these phenomena to pattern recognition and associative memory is a subject of great interest.
