Publisher's Synopsis
The development of a non-agricultural sector in rural areas of India is being increasingly considered as a major source for generating employment and reducing the overstretched urban infrastructure. This volume is an empirical contribution to the understanding of this process of economic diversification. It provides the first extensive, up-to-date analysis of the nature, trends and determinants of rural, non-agricultural employment, and examines the inter- and intra- state variations in the levels of such activity.
