Teenager Jack Peaty has broken his late father's rule. Before his untimely death, Robert Peaty had warned his son not to fall in love with a dog because they live short, hard lives on the frontier.
It's the summer of 1849, and Jack is struggling to prove he can provide for his mother and sisters on the family's homestead in north Missouri. As the man of the family, it is up to Jack to drive their cash crop of pigs to market. He and Jaydee, short for Jack's dog, soon discover that pigs have a mind of their own, and the nearer markets in Kirksville and Macon are already glutted with the year's bumper crop of pigs.
ack won't give up, and he and Jaydee brave wolves, bad weather, and unscrupulous traders to reach St. Joseph where travelers headed to the California gold fields will buy his pigs. Jack's father's warning comes back to him when Jaydee is stolen by a gambler who wants to pit him against the town's most savage dog in a fight to the death.
Jack feels responsible since he bragged about Jaydee's prowess as a fighter, making claims that weren't strictly true. The odds against rescuing his friend are slim, but Jack won't give up until he proves that he and Jaydee are both winners and survivors.
