Publisher's Synopsis

Fourteen year old Max Taylor dreams of running his own TV news station. With the help of cameraman Ollie ‘Sniffer’ Morris (who can smell a great news story from five miles away), designer Becky Roberts (aka the ‘IT’ girl because of her impressive computer skills), presenter Rachael Cooper (a cool and talented American actress in year 10) and Akbar Khan (the techno-wizard of the school drama club) he manages to create one in his dad’s garden shed. The station is soon a big hit, and makes national headlines after the Newskids trace a school friend who has become the subject of a nationwide missing persons search. Their newfound celebrity status opens doors that would otherwise have remained closed – including the chance to go behind the scenes at the World Cup which is being staged ‘at home’ in the new Wembley Stadium. As they prepare to enter the arena of international football, they discover that England’s superstar striker Lenny Dimaggio is not all that he seems. But their knowledge comes at a price and leads to Sniffer’s kidnap by the star’s henchmen. Using secret filming and late-night stakeouts, the kids hit on an idea that may thwart the striker`s plans– and end his career. The atmosphere is at fever pitch as 90 thousand Wembley spectators and a worldwide TV audience count down to kick-off for the semifinal – unaware that the outcome of the match is in the hands of five kids with a TV station in a little town called Goston.
