Ideas previously censored because of the challenge they posed both to traditional Marxism-Leninism and the political and economic foundation of the Soviet state became the subject of vigorous public discussion after 1985. This book examines the officially-endorsed "new political thinking" and its origins. It also, however, ranges more widely to consider the scope and significance of novel ideas which have found their way into large-circulation Soviet publications, even though not all of them have been endorsed at the highest political levels.
