It required 24 hours for cherries packed in fiberboard boxes to cool from 72° F. To 13 hours for cherries packed in wood boxes, and 9 hours for cherries packed in polystyrene foam boxes.
If 25 percent of the western cherry crop were shipped by airfreight and 75 percent by rail, about could be saved annually if the cherries were packed in either fiberboard boxes or in polystyrene boxes instead of in wood boxes.
