Publisher's Synopsis

New Politics is associated with the emergence of new social movements, which are challenging todayÆs industrial societies. Even though the labour movement may be a potential alliance partner, the relationship between New and Old Social Movements is by no means a harmonious one. - - This book analyses the impact of new political ideologies on Trade Unions in Sweden and Germany. Referring to modern organisation theory and by means of a quantitative content analysis, the author demonstrates using the example of the nuclear energy debate between 1973 until 1990 the continuity and changes of standpoints of 19 individual trade unions. The investigation arrives at a surprising conclusion that German unions are divided into productionist and new politics unions while the Swedish unions resisted the challenge of new politics. - - The book is helpful, for all interested in the societal impact of New Social Movements, Trade Union Politics, Comparative Studies, Applied Organisation Theory and Content Analysis. Furthermore, the analysis gives an empirical account of the development of industrial societies. - -
