Publisher's Synopsis

A companion volume to "Fichte: Historical Contexts/Contemporary Controversies", this book includes original contributions from 11 scholars currently teaching at North American universities and two Swiss scholars. Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814), although frequently misunderstood and little-studied, particularly in English-language circles, was a major philosophical thinker and representative of German idealism. The topics addressed here suggest the breadth of Fichte's philosophy and are signs of the contemporary effort to explore the relationship between his system of thought (the so-called Wissenschaftslehre) and current philosophical debates.;Some of the issues discussed include the relationship between "theoretical" and "practical" reason, and the political implications of the Wissenschaftslehre. In addition, the volume includes an introduction that surveys the history of Fichte interpretation in the English-speaking world, and assesses the current state of Fichte studies.
