Bookseller Notes

An attractive arcadian production, the first edition in English of the Moralische Erzhlungen und Idyllen (Zurich, 1772) by Swiss poet Gessner (1730-1788). 'The story of the Two Friends of Bourbon was communicated by M. Diderot to our author, who thought proper to publish it with these Idyls, as a monument of friendship that the cultivation of letters alone has produced between two men, whom distant countries have ever held separate.' This seems to be the first appearance of this Diderot story.

Description

FIRST ENGLISH TRANSLATION, large margins, engraved title-page, 10 plates, engraved head and tail pieces (all taken from designs by Gessner); printed on thick paper; some light spotting and variable offsetting from the plates; pp. [4], 129, [1], large 8vo in half-sheets;

Bibliography: Adams DD46; Morgan 2319.
