Obesity plays a significant role in the development of diabetes mellitus and in the progression of various diabetic complications. It is however, a complicated disorder in terms of genetics, metabolism and clinical practice. Thus the precise mechanism of the involvement of obesity in diabetic states has yet to be clarified in detail. At the same time, remarkable scientific progress has recently been made in this field, as these Proceedings testify.
