The Information Age is upon us. The very structure of society is shifting, challenging librarians and other information professionals. They will have to accomodate growing information needs and more demanding requirements, keep up with and master revolutionary technologies, and continue to provide accurate, precise and timely information economically. How they will meet future challenges depends to a large degree on the competencies they acquire through education, training, and experience. This book presents the results of a project funded by the Department of Education, Library Education Research and Resources Branch, Division of Library Programs. It describes in detail the environment within whcich librarians and other information professionals work, and it identifies and describes competencies.
