There are no better letters than those contained in the ponderous volumes of Nelson's correspondence preserved by Sir Harris Nicolas. Nelson's Letters are supremely interesting for two reasons. For the brief seven years of his glory he, and almost only he, stood between Napoleon and the conquest of the world. What he was doing, therefore, was of the first importance, and he was accustomed to throw his whole thoughts, his whole soul, frankly into his letters.
