1893. After a harrowing journey recent college graduate Leon Tolinchinsky arrives in Kulyenchikov Ukraine to tutor Sophia Zubritsky nineteen. Her parents Nickolai and Leyna inform him the village is cursed rendering every resident as dumb as a bag of rocks.
