A lo largo este libro nos hemos centrado en describir y dar a conocer distintas actuaciones de Enfermeria que beneficiaran al paciente desde el punto de vista de sus creencias y valores. Para ello, nos centraremos en el modelo de las catorce necesidades basicas de Virginia Henderson, concretamente en la necesidad once, las creencias y valores. La necesidad de creencias y valores es descrita por Virginia Henderson como una necesidad de auto-realizacion; es decir, la capacidad que tiene la persona para explorar, conocer y promover, sus propios principios, valores y creencias. Asi mismo, es descrita como la capacidad de la persona para manejar esas cuestiones a efectos de elaborar y elucubrar el sentido que le desea dar a la propia vida y a su paso por la sociedad. A lo largo del tiempo, se ha producido cierta confusion en la utilizacion de los terminos creencia y valor. Por ejemplo, asociar todo lo que implica el termino creencia con religion. El factor religioso tiene un papel importante en el quehacer cultural de la persona, pero ello no implica el dotar a la palabra creencia de un significado mucho mas plural y al margen de la religion. De este modo, se incluirian las creencias humanistas y las creencias de tipo mas cotidiano. Lo mismo ocurre con el termino valor. Los valores varian en funcion de la persona; es decir, dependiendo de su experiencia y edad. Por ello, hay que tener en cuenta ya bien sean eticos o esteticos, su fluctuacion. Para seguir continuando, es necesario definir una serie de conceptos: -Religion: Conjunto de creencias o dogmas acerca de la divinidad, de sentimientos de veneracion y temor hacia ella, de normas morales para la conducta individual y social y de practicas rituales, principalmente la oracion y el sacrificio para darle culto. -Cultura: Conjunto de modos de vida y costumbres, conocimientos y grado de desarrollo artistico, cientifico, industrial, en una epoca, grupo social etc. -Valores: conjunto de normas adquiridas por la comunidad que regulan el comportamiento humano en la sociedad . -Creencia: Firme asentimiento y conformidad con algo. -Fe: conjunto de creencias de alguien, de un grupo o de una multitud de personas. -Ideologia: Conjunto de las ideas fundamentales que caracteriza el pensamiento de una persona, colectividad o epoca, de un movimiento cultural, religioso o politico, etc. El sistema de valores y creencias de la persona constituye su esencia mas intima, su universo simbolico por lo que se hace necesario abordar esta necesidad de una manera amplia y no solo desde el punto de vista religioso. Este sistema, se va formando de forma progresiva a partir de una cierta edad, lo que conlleva consigo un proceso de cambio permanente y conflicto, siendo necesario explorar los valores y creencias tanto de ninos como adultos. La importancia de esta necesidad radica en que toda persona necesita una serie de valores y creencias para poder desarrollarse como tal. Segun Virginia Henderson, esta necesidad al igual que las demas, parten del principio de que todos los seres humanos tienen una serie de necesidades basicas que deben satisfacer. Dichas necesidades, son normalmente cubiertas por cada individuo cuando esta sano y tiene los suficientes conocimientos para ello. De acuerdo con este modelo, la persona desea ser independiente y se esfuerza por conseguirlo, es un todo complejo y si una necesidad no esta satisfecha el individuo se convierte en un ser dependiente que requiere la intervencion enfermera. La enfermera dentro del desarrollo de su funcion, debe respetar todas las religiones y creencias, y a su vez conocerlas para facilitar la asistencia sanitaria a personas de distintas culturas. Asi mismo, debera conocer los valores y creencias de los pacientes para ayudarlos en el proceso de salud - enfermedad.
