Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Natural Theology, Vol. 2: Or Evidences of the Existence and Attributes of the Deity; Collected From the Appearances of Nature
There are glands in the skin of birds for the secretion of oil, as being important for the support of the feathers. Beside these each feather appears to be supplied with oily matter from the point of the skin where it is inserted. But the quantity of oil ne cessary for rendering them impenetrable to water is furnished by the oil glands here mentioned, situated on the sacrum, which are particularly large in wading and aquatic birds, and they pour out their 011 by two fissure-like openings.
