Robin Gale is bored and unhappy because her mother left town just before her ninth birthday. Hiding out in her grandparent's barn to escape the hot Kansas summer, she runs into a magician of Lo with a message for her and her siblings, "please save us!" Her brother and sister indulge Robin in what they think is a game of make-believe and find themselves transported to a world where plants can sing, a musical flute can make you disappear, and a war between science and magic is being waged by the furry little people who rule on Lo.
