Publisher's Synopsis

Ellen Mary Abdy Williams (1857-1937), who published under her married name of Mrs Bernard Whishaw, was an English writer born in Dawlish, Devon. In 1885 she married education reformer and writer Bernard Whishaw and for a time (1885-88?) she edited the literary periodical Time. She was the author of four novels, the first of which, 'Two Ifs', appeared in 1884, and the last, 'The World Below', which she admitted lacked polish due to a long illness, in 1887. Around 1900 the couple moved to Seville, Spain, and devoted themselves to the study of Spanish culture and archaeology. After her husband's death in 1914, Ellen moved to Andalusia where she helped to create a museum. First published in 1914, this was one of several books she wrote about Spain. Illustrated with photographs throughout.
