Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from My Neighbor the Workingman

I have only to call the attention of the readers of this book to the events which have followed since it was put into the hands of the publishers. They are the insistent demands by union laborers that the President shall reverse the action of Congress, done by representatives Of all the people, the threats of prosecution and injunction in the courts if the railway bill became law, and the plans follow ing the passage of the bill to defeat at the polls the members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives who voted for it as enemies of labor. Is this country to be governed by any class of men by intimidation? What could be more abhorrent to the spirit Of our constitutional liberty and the representative and lawful forms of our government? The day has passed - it never was here - when laws can be passed or defeated by threats upon our free and fearless franchise. It is time that some one drew the line plainly and fear lessly in matters of individual and governmental rights.
