She ate parched corn and beef jerky all the way. She tracked and trailed with all the skill and speed she could muster and did not stop except to give her horse a drink at some creek crossings. Her horse, Strongheart was well trained and was obedient. He seemed to sense the urgency of this trip.....she picked up the trail again.....but wait, what about those two who might be trailing her, "I must do something," she thought. Little Dove hurriedly took Strong Heart up the ridge andtied him to a limb. She grabbed the 30-30 rifle and raced back down where she had a view of the trail on the other side of the creek...and there they were, tracking and trailing. They came to the creek and stopped. It was Standing Buffalo and his running mate, Joe Buck. Joe Buck was saying, she'll pay for what she has done and chief Great Eagle won't know what happened to her...... "John, please slow down." "Strong Heart, we must keep going, I must catch John - Please. Little Dove had jumped into the deep part of the creek to bathe from the trail and they heard the rifle shot nearby. Then...come up from there skinny dippers, we've got plans for you and he felt his crotch. That night John wrote in his daily log book: My Little Dove, My Little Dove, where are you? My heart is grieved; it aches with rivers of pain. Each night I kneel, 'til my knees are sore. How much longer can I bear this? I hurt!
