My Life as a Car uses the metaphor of automobile maintenance in order to outline a mental health diagnostic path (similar to those used for in-take assessments) as well as point toward possible solutions. My Life as a Car offers a diagnostic path through its chapter structure and in its appendix; it uses the playful metaphor of keeping one's car in good repair as a means for lifting the hood or bonnet of one's mind to inspect the workings.
