When George Denn wakes up to find his Mum and Dad gone, it feels as if his world has come to an end. He hates being home alone. The fear of the monster outside makes him afraid of going out to look for his parents or to buy food. Should he just stay indoors and die of starvation? What if he is attacked for his black hair?
He finally takes the bold step of going outside but what is supposed to be a normal trip to the supermarket turns into a horrific nightmare.
He is harassed by a pack of street bullies who threaten to kill him because his hair is black. They chase him and he narrowly escapes being hit by a car. He runs into the woods.
But there in the woods, a wicked Witch is waiting to kidnap him because she wants to eat his flesh and crack his bones.
Then at the last minute, the Dragon emerges. But can a Dragon save George and his new-found friend, David from ending up in the Witch's boiling cauldron? Will George ever see his Mum and Dad again? Will George live to tell his friends at school about his frightening adventure?
It is a story about a twelve-year-old boy's fight for survival in modern times. It is a fight to preserve his black heritage.
