In Beaufort, South Carolina, the last official klavern of the Klan may have been officially run off decades ago but smoldering Old South undercurrents of racial disharmony still stream through the veins of the community. Consequently, when a prominent local white citizen is found murdered with all evidence pointing at a colored Captain stationed at the nearby Marine Corps Recruit Depot, the seething morass of old hate and newfangled politicking is all set to ignite. Anxious to ensure that a fair trial is had, the Corps has dispatched one of its top legal dogs, JAG Major Jack Finnie, to aid the defense. Formerly, a lethal member or the dark world of special ops, he's now a prodigious litigator noted for his uncanny legal acumen but equally unorthodox courtroom theatrics. As the incendiary murder trial nears, with each side of the racial divide angling to fortify its agenda, Finnie peels back layer upon layer of intrigue and deception in the face of continuous roadblocks erected by local redneck bigots, corporate-sponsored mercenaries and political operatives.
