Lourdes is a horticulturist at the University of Washington - Seattle and Cordo is a reporter. They have a happy marriage, undisturbed until Lourdes is diagnosed with cancer. Shortly after this revelation, she kills herself. Even more disturbing is how she did it: By cutting out the baby from her stomach, then sailing out into the Pacific and setting herself on fire.
No one can make any sense of it. Cordo, though mystified and devastated, raises their daughter, Amelia, through colicky, terror-stricken nights. She grows up to be a mysterious woman with a baby of her own, and Cordo is repeatedly astounded by the similarities between her and Lourdes.
