Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Mornings at Matlock, Vol. 1 of 3

Matlock Bath, with the houses scattered on the side 'of the slope, here and there in pictu' resque disarrangement. On the Opposite side of the river, vast masses of naked rocks are contiguous to other eminences, scarcely less exalted, some of which are covered with green turf, some crowned with clumps of leafy trees. The familiar and the sublime are strangely mingled here trim cottages, neat shops, sump tuous hotels, and gravelled walks appearing scarcely in accordance with scenes where nature has been lavish of her wildest beauty. The very nomenclature of the show-places bur lesques the Romantic. In spite of all, Mat lock is beautiful and unique.
