Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Moravian Customs and Other Matters of Interest

Each settlement was not only a Church, but a religious community, governed by rules and regulations which had for their object a total separation from the smful follies and carnal lusts of the world. This fos tered the missionary zeal which constrained the Brethren to carry the gospel to the most degraded nations of the earth. But it also served to keep the Church small in numbers. Moravians have always been more eager to win souls for the Lamb that was slain than to gain members for their Church. Hundreds of people to whose spiritual needs they ministered in the early days of the Church in America were turned over to other Churches. Seventy thousand persons in Europe to-day are formed! Into societies and' served spiritually by fifty seven missionaries of the Moravian Church, although these people remain members of the State Churches. This is known as the Diaspora.
