This volume is an instalment of a more general design, and was not originally intended to be given to the public until that design had been carried out further in two other courses of Lectures.
But the Author was induced to change his intention by receiving an intimation from the Christian Evidence Committee, appointed in June 1870, by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, that they desired to include this in a series of works which they have at present in hand, with a view to the confutation of Unbelief.
