Publisher's Synopsis

With its subtly dancing Messiaenic rhythms, Roger Smalley's Monody for piano with live electronic modulation was composed in 1971-72, and requires the performer to both control the ring modulation and play additional triangles and drums. The music draws on the harmonic series and, in terms of its formal aspect, the Fibonacci sequence. Providing a jumping-off point for perhaps the most pivotal work of Smalley's whole career - Accord for two pianos - this pioneering 10-minute work was highly significant in the composer's development, and remains a captivating experience in concert.

'A very individual contribution to the contemporary piano repertoire.'
Contact (Peter Manning), Spring 1976
