Publisher's Synopsis

This text contains 37 works by the Impressionist Claude Monet, whose art has proved enduringly popular with audiences. All the works are from the holdings of the Art Institute of Chicago, which possesses one of the world's largest collections of Monet's paintings. They represent his entire career, and include several character drawings from his student years. The collection also shows the range of Monet's interests in the variety of landscapes in various seasons and at different times of the day, as well as in cityscapes and still lifes. His revolutionary and influential concept of painting in series can be seen in six works from his Grainstack series.;The volume is published to coincide with the exhibition "Claude Monet 1840-1926", held at the Art Institute of Chicago from July to November 1995. It is the first of a series of monographs, "Artists in Focus", which will feature artists who are particularly well-represented in the Institute's collection.
