Few areas of medicine remain unaffected by the rapid developments in the field of molecular genetics which have taken place in recent years. Not only the classic Mendelian disorders, but also diseases of complex and multifactorial aetiology are now susceptible to investigation at the level of chromosomal DNA sequence. Nevertheless, many clinicians remain baffled by the technical and theoretical issues involved, and uncertain of the implications for their field of practice.
