Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Military Reminiscences, Vol. 2: Extracted From a Journal of Nearly Forty Years' Active Service in the East Indies

After this faint outline of the damage sustained on shore, I know not what words can picture the horrors of the scene in the roads. Of all the ships, brigs, cutters, ketches, donies, 8m. Only one solitary brig escaped, by put ting out to sea, at the commencement of the storm. Many foundered at their anchors, for the surface rose as far out as nine fathoms, others were literally torn to pieces, and the rest dashed against the shore, in all directions. The whole beach was covered with wrecks, from St. Thome to the Custom House, a distance of nearly three miles.
