In addition to these the Collections of the Pioneer and Historical Society of Michigan published under State auspices, have been freely drawn upon; credit being usually given, where such material has been used.
The material of existing histories of the State has not been used at all, except in a few instances where opinions on some point have been cited from Justices Cooley or Campbell, on account of the great weight justly due to those eminent jurists.
It has been the belief of the writer that in compiling the history of a free, representative Commonwealth, there is no more certain and legitimate way of arriving at the movements of public sentiment among the people, or to ascertain the social or political aims and ideals. Of the population, than to study the laws and public docu ments of the legislatures and public officials. They will be found a complete re?ex of the thoughts, purposes, aspirations and demands of the masses of the electors.
