Kleist's sentence-structure is very characteristic, and at times varies quite considerably from the ordinary word order; a brief outline of the syntactic peculiarities is there fore given at the beginning of the notes. In the case-govern ment of the prepositions and in the gender and plural of nouns Kleist's usage also varies at times from that which is generally accepted; these peculiarities have been retained in the text, but attention is called to them in the notes.
