Excerpt: ... favour thy poor child once more with a spirit of faith and prayer to wrestle with thee, and to lay hold on some promise to plead at thy sacred footstool, and let not the avowed enemy of my peace and comfort rejoice to see me sunk so low; and how sweetly did those words steal, as it were, into my soul, "Trust in the Lord for ever; for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength;" and lead me to recollect how my dear mother, when in the agonies of death, uttered those very words. Said she, " I feel him everlasting strength now, in the swelling of Jordan;" and, turning herself towards me, put her hand on my head, and said, "May God Almighty bless thee, my child, with his special grace;" and those words fell with such weight on my mind, that though I was then only fourteefi years of age, I have reason to hope that they proved as a nail fastened in a sure place by the great Master of assemblies. O the blessing of special grace, when we are stripped of all beside, our riches having taken wing and fled, our friends and relations passing us by neglected or unknown, our good name and reputation lost, (but, blessed be God, without any guilt of conscience, ) being kept dependant on the Father of mercies, and obliged to come every day with a "Give us this day our daily bread," seeing his wonders in this deep of poverty, and proving those dealings of God with us a sure and effectual remedy against pride and vain glory, and making us to know that we are at the alone disposal of a kind and indulgent Father, who has all things in his own hands, good when he gives, and supremely good when he denies, and knowing that godliness, with contentment, is great gain, having the promise of the life that now is, as well as that which is to come!
