These two Lectures are printed in compliance with the unanimous request of the audience before which they were delivered. Some notes are added which I thought might be interesting to such as care for mat ters of this kind. Those whose attention has been directed to the subjects here brought forward will readily appreciate the difficulty I have experienced in abridging the accounts given of these occurrences, so as to bring them, in an intelligible form, within the limits at my disposal and they will also, I hope, look with an indulgent eye on the many defects they will find in the following pages.
