When Dr David Henry (Dermot Mulroney) and his wife Nora (Gretchen Mol) give birth to twins, Phoebe and Paul, David is dismayed to discover that Phoebe has Down's syndrome. Unbeknownst to his wife, he makes the decision to send Phoebe to an institution, telling Nora that her daughter was stillborn. However, when the attending nurse (Emily Watson) decides to intervene and raise the baby herself, she sets into motion a sequence of events that will haunt the doctor and his wife for years to come.
