IN these Memorials I have put on record all the information I could gather regarding Dr. Candlish personally - his early training - his habits of life his correspondence - and his public transactions, Ecclesiastical and Philanthropic. It seemed suitable that a man who occupied such a prominent place, and who took such a large share in the transactions of a very critical period in the history of Scotland, should have his words, and actings in relation to them, embodied and preserved in this way'; for these are of abiding interest, and largely illustrate an epoch of Scottish history, pregnant with issues which are still in progress of development in this and in other lands.
