Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Memorable Women: The Story of Their Lives
However imperfectly this work may have been performed, it has cost me some labor and trouble, not from the difficulty of finding materials, but of compress ing them into what I wished to be a clear and readable shape.
In selecting lives for biographical condensation, I have not been guided by the admiration so commonly felt for those brilliant characters who have been re markable for merely intellectual qualifications and un profitable or injudicious heroisms: I have endeavored simply to set before the young women of the present day examples of wives and mothers who have done their duty under difficulties and temptations; and if in some cases genius has accompanied high moral endow ments, we have all the more reason to be gratified by the picture of combined excellence of heart and mind.
