Publisher's Synopsis

Thomas Hughes (1822-96) was an English lawyer, judge, politician and author, best known for his novel Tom Brown's School Days (1857) a semi-autobiographical tale set at Rugby School which both he and his elder brother George attended, and it was George on whom the character of Tom Brown was modelled. This memoir written following his brother's untimely death, was published in 1873 and dedicated to George's sons and his own. It draws on Hughes's recollections of the close familial bond between the two brothers who were little more than a year apart in age, and on family letters giving an insight into George's school and college days, also including extracts from George's correspondence with his sons during their schooldays. Includes a portrait of George Hughes.
