Dr. Trotter has four veterinary and sixteen lay assistants. The Veterinarians receive at the beginning $800 per year. The highest salary paid is per year. Each man is paid ac cording to his qualifications and the manner in which he does his work. Country slaughter houses are under control of the rural district police officials. The blood and offal are conveyed to local reduction plants which are conveniently located. Hogs for im mediate slaughter only are permitted around the slaughter houses.
The building and equipment when completed will cost as much, if not more, than the one at Edinburgh. Offices with lavatories, lockers and shower baths are provided for the Chief and his assistants. There is a well equipped laboratory with a bacteri ologist and chemist in charge where samples of meat and milk are examined. The administration building is a two story concrete structure.
When an animal dies in Scotland the law forbids removal of the carcass until a veterinarian makes a post mortem examination and issues a permit.
Glasgow's milk supply is examined by one veterinarian, who inspects the cows barns and utensils. The supply comes from about 900 dairies. The samples collected are examined at the city abattoir. The inspection is not entirely satisfactory.
