The development of hydrogen storage materials with a high-capacity-per-unit volume and weight is vital to achieving the goal of using hydrogen as a ubiquitous energy source. Fundamental materials issues such as structure, hydrogen transport and stability are central to the development of successful hydrogen storage systems. Exploring these issues requires a strong coupling of materials synthesis, characterization and advanced theory and modeling.
