Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Marianela

Benito Pérez Galdós is one of the most popular contemporary Spanish writers, and his works are well - known not only in Spain, but wherever Spanish is spoken.

Born in the Canary Islands, in 1845, he came to Madrid to study law in 1863. After writing for the press and the stage, he began his literary career with the production of an historical novel, La Fon tana de Oro. Since that time he has written about seventy volumes of novels and ten plays.

A few years ago he built a residence in Santan der, near his friends Pereda and Menendez Pelayo, and there spends a great deal of his time, writing with remarkable regularity and tireless energy. In the winter he goes to Madrid, to keep in touch with current events or direct a rehearsal, and occasionally he travels in France or England, in order to see new scenes and obtain rest from his labors.
