Publisher's Synopsis
A fundamental problem that mankind has faced from time immemorial is made manifest in Maria Lassnig's art: it is the question of the image, the question of the visual on a fundamental level, in which the visible world can only partly be defined as the place of the visual. This catalogue follows the artist's oeuvre in a retrospective form, in representative and, in some cases, never-before shown examples from all of her creative periods and, as such, traces developments in painting between abstract expressionism and newer figuration.
