Publisher's Synopsis

This is an investigation of the fairy-tale images in Atwood's fiction, poetry and art. Her writing and art braid together fairy-tale themes from Grimm and Andersen with the feminist concerns for which she is renowned - "The Handmaid's Tale", for example, is her version of "Little Red Riding Hood" facing patriarchy's wolf.;In relating Atwood's art to her fiction, Wilson shows how such fairy-tale images, along with myths, Bible stories, history, film, art and popular literature, reveal archetypes in Atwood's work. Wilson also challenges feminist assumptions that fairy tales limit gender roles, and argues that Atwood uses the fairy tale to transform the constricting images of women and men.
