Publisher's Synopsis
Can art history be told as a story of reception - and its refusal? How is the concept of reception to be positioned in relation to that of effect and influence? What is the relationship between reception and innovation? The band starts from these questions. The concept of reception history, which has been widespread in literary studies since the late 1960s, and the associated approach are of great importance for art historical research. Concepts of adapting or appropriating artefacts, be it under religious, political-ideological, aesthetic or scientific aspects, have already been made fruitful for the subject in many ways. This publication, with a wide range of material, traces the history of reception for the first time from antiquity to modernity and across genre boundaries: 28 contributions from the disciplines of art history, early Christian archaeology, cultural history, history, Byzantine art history, the history of science and literary studies explore the topic anew. Ingo Herklotz has advanced the history of reception in numerous publications and created methodological foundations beyond the subject. This volume is dedicated to him.
