In Athens, the city where Rodrigo Rey Rosa currently resides, Teodora Jaramillo de Quirós, a Guatemalan tourist, recognizes her compatriot and introduces her to her companion, Rupert Ranke, a hitherto unknown Swiss author who will lead the author of Severina and The Human Material to his flat in the Greek capital to encourage him to edit this book.
