Publisher's Synopsis

During the 1960s Michael Manser designed a series of significant Modernist houses. It was a period when private housing was almost exclusively traditional in design. Manser’s achievements are even more extraordinary when one realises they were built in areas of outer London where his Miesian designs were in sharp contrast to the surrounding suburban context. The DNA of these early houses - orthogonal forms, floor ceiling glazing, open plans and internal courtyards continues in work of the Manser Practice today. Michael Manser CBE is a Past President of the RIBA and the eponymous Manser Medal is awarded each year to the best new house designed by an architect in the UK. It was created in 2001 to celebrate excellence in housing design and was named in honour of Michael’s contribution to residential design.
