Cleve and Mary are just 7 years old and living at a Pittsburgh orphanage, when they say "I do" to each other, at a make-believe wedding. Not only do they say it, they mean it -and what's more, believe themselves married in the eyes of the Lord. A year later, both are left heartbroken - Cleve is torn from Mary's arms and taken away, adopted by a family from Montana. Ten long years pass, and Cleve is too afraid even to love, his losses having hardened his heart.
