Publisher's Synopsis
Contains a total of 26 papers taken from a four day symposium on Magnetic Energy Conversion: Comparison of Evidence from Space and the Laboratory. Several disciplines were brought together in an attempt to search for commonalities between laboratory and cosmic plasma physics. Represented were theory, computer modelling, laboratory physics, magnetospheric physics, solar physics, stellar atmospheres and the interstellar medium. Observations of super thermal events in many cosmic plasmas from the magnetosphere to galactic jets provide strong evidence that changing magnetic fields are the cause of these events. It remains to be seen, whether magnetic fields are the sole energy reservoir for the high energetic events, but there is agreement, that all super thermal events in laboratory plasmas are caused by changing magnetic fields.
