It's a lifelong slave registration number, an SLRN, similar to a VIN number on a car. When someone scans it, it identifies us as your owners, refers to a website for information on returning you for a reward. We also implant a chip that sets off an alarm when you go through a security gate at the airport, department store, or cross the invisible fence on our property perimeter. Being on the back of your neck makes it easier for our friends at the transportation hubs to see it. They get five grand for your return, people outside the country get twenty-five. - - -My brother John is trolling off the American Gulf Coast, not for fish, but for boats in trouble. He and I are not a lot alike. I'm a calculating businesswoman, he is an unkempt varmint with a swagger, a drunk who fancies himself a pirate, his crew the same. - - -
"You intentionally rammed us you sonofabitch!" screamed the husband. "We don't owe you anything."
John pushed him back into the gulf. It was a fifteen-foot drop. Everyone looked over the edge to see if he was okay.
"Help, help!" he cried out, floundering in the water. A shark fin could be seen skimming ominously along the water's surface.
